Reading International announces prestigious industry award for State Cinema by Angelika

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA (November 6, 2023) - Reading International, Inc. (“Reading”), is thrilled to announce that the State Cinema by Angelika has been recognized as the Australian Independent Distributors Association’s (AIDA) Best Metro Multiplex cinema for 2023.

The cinema received the prestigious award at the Australian International Movie Convention (AIMC), held this week on the Gold Coast, Australia. This marks the second consecutive year that the State Cinema by Angelika has been recognized by AIDA, Australia’s premier Association for Independent Film Distributors. It is a true testament to the cinema’s standing in the industry and the key role it plays in Hobart’s thriving cultural landscape.

‘We were absolutely thrilled to receive such a standout award again from AIDA, a well-respected institution that has had such a positive influence on Australian cinema and its film industry for decades,’ Mark Douglas, Managing Director of Reading Cinemas Australia said.

‘The State Cinema by Angelika holds a special place in the heart of all Hobartians and our company is extremely honored and proud to continue to nurture such an icon.’

The award caps off a standout year for the State, having recently celebrated an amazing 110 years of entertaining the local community. Along with the State Bookstore by Angelika, State Café, Angelika Bar, and Hobart’s only rooftop cinema screen, the State is set to bring the magic of the movies and culture to the region for many years to come.

There is no better time to see a movie at the State, with a wide range of films currently screening such as Caravaggio's Shadow, Killers of the Flower Moon, Dumb Money and Foe. In addition, to hosting the Jewish International Film Festival, the State will soon offer the State-of-Mind Festival, which has been curated by Mike Vile, head programmer for Reading Australia.

Tickets for the current film line up, along with advance tickets for Stop Making Sense Remastered, The Marvels and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes can be purchased now at or on the Angelika app.
